An Incomplete Conversation

Anitha Devi Pillai

What if when our eyes meet

and one of us turns away,

will we fill the air with silence

or empty words, laying

it side by side

a question,

a nod, smile

empty talk?

I hope when my voice

reaches you

with stretched arms

in a whisper

across the table

at your favorite spot

you will hear me

in your heart.
